The Greek islands are amazing options for a truly wonderful summer holiday! Kos is part of the Dodecanese island group, in the south-eastern part of the Aegean Sea. Calm waters, sandy beaches and plenty of sights to see!
Kos, Chios, Lesvos, Samos. Maybe you remember these names popping up in the news: they were in the frontline when asylum-seekers started to arrive on their shorelines. Their kindness should not be forgotten, and if you wish to experience an authentic Greek getaway: consider these islands as an option. Hop on with us on a motorcycle, I will try to convince you why it is worth it!
Have you dreamt of calm, shallow and clear beaches with hardly anyone around? Kos has an amazing selection of different beaches where everyone can find what they are looking for. Good to know that on the northern part of the island the waters are more calm and warmer, while on the south the waves are a bit bigger, the water cooler, but the view is more stunning! For an epic swim in the sunset choose one on the northern part of the island.
Here are the best beaches:
Child friendly beaches
Golden Beach (Παραλία περιοχής Αλυκών Κω) and Mastichari Beach is nearby the Alikés Salzsee salt lake, where flamingos can be spotted during winter time. This section between Tingaki and Mastichari offers a multitude of smaller sandy beaches with warm water, tiny waves, shallow and slowly deepening shoreline. Perfect for families, children and to catch the most beautiful sunsets!
If you are around try Tam Tam beach restaurant or Ampeli Wine Yard which is a traditional Greek tavern.
Dazzling blue beaches
The small nearby islands offer the most beautiful waters! Plati, Pserimos and Kalimnos have multiple hidden gems around the coast, with cooler waters, but the underwater wildlife is unlike anywhere else! Pserimos and Kalimnos can be reached by ferries, Plati is included in the itinerary of the island hopping boat tours!
Close to Kos city
Lambi Beach is just a short walk away from the city centre. Offers calm waters with sandy beach. The only downside is that because of its proximity to the city it is crowded.
Here are the most amazing seaside restaurants check Psaropoula Fish Tavern or Boats on the Coast, both offer a huge portions of incredibly tasty fresh seafood!
White Stone cave
Are you an experienced swimmer? If yes, check out the beaches nearby the White Stone Cave! No one will be around for sure, the cliffs here are stunning! I would not dare to go for a swim in the deeper parts, but for a quick swim in the shallow and sunbathing it is an amazing option. A dirt road will take you down to Cap Routhianos (Ακρωτήρι Ρουθιανό), a motorcycle will be able to get you there.
If you are around don’t forget to visit Aspri Petra cave. An easy hike up the hill will take you to a quiet viewpoint from where you can admire the turbulent waters and the cliffs.
Agios Stefanos Beach
You have the best view of the island of Kastri, with an iconic blue church. The water is cooler on the southern shores and the shoreline is rocky on the deeper parts, but that’s why it’s worth taking the snorkeling gear here. The beach here is sandy, there are also slowly deepening parts marked, where children can bathe safely.
Along the coast you can freely visit the ruins of the Basilica of Àgios Stéfanos. The early Christian basilica, built between 496 and 554 AD, has remained in the best condition here on the island. Ornate columns and mosaic floors can be viewed up close.
Thermal waters: Paralia Thermes
The healing water of 40-50 °C, breaking up from under the mountain, meets the waves of the sea. The natural pool is shallow and the water’s temperature depends on the tide and the size of the waves, it is worth trying the water in several parts, it will have a different temperature in each corner. Bathing at night is a special program here, you can watch thousands of stars soaking in the warm water, but it is an unparalleled experience at sunrise too!
An unmissable program is the tour selection, offered by the boats and ferries departing from Kos!
Turkey, Bodrum is just a couple of kilometres away ferries will take you there for a nice Turkish experience spicing up your Greek stay. Beside the cultural differences it is an amazing opportunity to try the famously clear waters on this side as well.
Rhodes – the star of the Greek islands
Rhodes is probably the most well-known among the Dodecanese island group. For a full historical perspective the island is a must see, although Kos has amazing built heritage as well. The beaches however offer more or less the same experiences.
Get to know the underwater life
Are you a fan of underwater wildlife? There is a boat called Nemo with a transparent glass bottom, dedicated to see the best of the waters around Kos. The itinerary includes a swim in a natural pool, lunch and snorkelling equipment as well. The tour costs 20 Euros, book it on the boat, that is the cheapest. Island hopping on three island
Another great way to explore the nearby islands and swim around the most beautiful beaches is the 3 island hopping tours offered by big party boats and smaller chilled boats, like the Princess Diana boat https://www.facebook.com/Princess-Diana-Boat-Kos-786561178410425/.
Bear in mind that in windy weather only the bigger boats will set sail. Princess Diana ensured to get us a place on a bigger boat when they could not leave the port. Peter Pan took us where we wanted, but based on the looks we would have never chosen this one.
The full on party boat turned out to be extra entertaining, the crew was amazing and caring. And they did their best to make sure everyone is having a great time. 2 swimming stops were included, one on Pserimos, the clearest bay I have seen here, and the other in Plati, where you could jump from the boat into the 10 metres deep crystal clear water! Another stop included a meal and a little city tour in the beautiful city of Kalimnos. The 7 hours long day tour is only 20 Euros, meal included.
Whichever you decide to include in your itinerary a great experience is guaranteed.
